Birchfield Curriculum Statement

Vision: We will aim for excellence in all we do to ensure that our children thrive academically, personally and socially in order for them to become successful citizens of the future.

School Values: Determination, Respect, Curiosity, Ambition, Resilience and Empathy

Intent

At Birchfield Primary School we have a climate of high expectations and aspirations for all. We believe that all children can learn and develop well when there is a progressive and rich curriculum in place and where consistent and evidence informed pedagogy supports children to learn more and remember more.

Our school curriculum reflects the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Statutory Framework and the National Curriculum and aims to develop the children’s character alongside their academic abilities. Curriculum content balances progressive knowledge and skills set within an enquiry approach which aims to develop resilient, inquisitive and ambitious learners.

We place a great emphasis on children developing the skills that will enable them to learn well in all areas. Reading is key to our approach. The texts we choose are carefully selected to drive the learning and expose children to contexts and vocabulary which will develop their confidence as learners and their ability to make links in their learning, building on their prior knowledge and skills.

Children at Birchfield learn well in an environment where relationships matter and where the individual is nurtured. Children learn about themselves and the world beyond their experiences and are well prepared to achieve their potential and make a positive and responsible contribution to society.

Implementation

To ensure effective delivery of the curriculum, the statutory requirements for each subject within a key stage are identified and mapped. Progression in subjects is achieved by identifying the key concepts, skills and knowledge that children need over time.

Enquiry questions linked to key texts provide a framework for delivering content. Children benefit from an approach which develops their sense of enquiry and their ability to ask and answer questions about what they have seen, heard and read.

Evidence informed practise ensures that there is a consistent approach to quality first teaching across subjects and year groups. Children throughout our school receive a consistent diet of effective teaching and learning from well trainedstaff. As required, some children may receive additional support to keep up and address any gaps in their knowledge and understanding.

Impact

School monitors the delivery of the planned curriculum and standards in teaching and learning through the use of a range of mechanisms including:

• Progress and attainment data and information

• Book looks

• Lesson observations and learning walks

• Pupil voice

Children at Birchfield learn and achieve well right from the start. They develop knowledge and skills across the full scope of disciplines and are prepared well for the next stage in their learning. They develop the requisite attitudes to learning and towards others that will enable them to be responsible, empathetic and capable citizens of the future.
